1951 ABSTRACT OIL ON CANVAS
BY HELGE ERNST Sold
Helge Ernst (1916-1991) was a Danish painter, designer and filmmaker. Mostly a self-taught artist, although in 1938 he was briefly trained in Paris by the French sculptor, painter and writer André Lhote (1885-1962).
Ernst, like many painters of that era, started as a landscape and figurative painter, but as from the beginning of the 50’s his work became more and more abstract.
This is an early 1951 oil on canvas (still signed with full name, later with HE) and clearly shows the transition from figurative to geometric.
