ABSTRACT OIL ON MASONITE
BY HELGE ERNST

Helge Ernst (1916-1991) was a Danish painter, designer and filmmaker. Mostly a self-taught artist, although in 1938 he was briefly trained in Paris by the French sculptor, paint and writer André Lhote (1885-1962).

Ernst, like may painters of that era, started as a landscape and figurative painter, but as from the beginning of the 1950s his work became more and more abstract, of which this oil on board, titled ‘Figur’ is a very strong example.

‘Figur’ dates from ca 1955, is signed HE in the painting and signed and titled on the back side.
