FIRST EDITION JH501 AKA 'THE CHAIR'
BY HANS J. WEGNER Sold

Of the many works designed by Wegner, this particular piece is unarguably the most important. The chair is superior on several counts: the perfection of the form, the comfort, the finishing of the details and the use of materials. (‘Danish Chairs’, page 108)

Our JH501 was designed in 1949 and is a first edition, produced by cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen. It was given its alias ‘The Chair’ by the director of Den Permanante in 1950, expressing the ultimateness of the piece. The chair became even more famous and iconic, when John F. Kennedy used it during his televised debates with Richard Nixon before the 1960 election.

This rare piece is in very good condition for its age, with a nice patina on frame and cane. Marked in the frame by Johannes Hansen. A true collector’s item.
